Breeze Yoko is a Johannesburg based multimedia artist specialising in video and graffiti, and a full-time student of the UniverCity of Life, where he is currently undertaking a Phd in Streetology. Yoko first made his mark on the underground scene in his hometown, Cape Town, in the late nineties as a member of the hip-hop collective Groundworks. He has over ten years experience in film and television production, as well as a few stints acting for television, and feature films. His first solo work, Biko’s Children, is a reflection on contemporary South African culture and the legacy of freedom fighter Steve Biko. In 2007, Biko’s Children won an Audience Award at the Tricontinental Film Festival, South Africa. The following year it gained international acclaim, picking up the Special Jury Award at the Sienna Film Festival, Italy, and the Blachere Foundation Prize at Dak’art, Senegal. Following this success Yoko was selected to take part in the 2008 Berlinale Talent Campus. Since then he has exhibited and attended residencies in France through the Blachere Foundation; the Musee Confluences Photographe, Lyon; and with the support of ProHelvetia, Focus 10 – Contemporary Art Africa, held as part of Art|41|Basel, Switzerland. Yoko’s work is informed by global street culture and the universal language of hip-hop. It is also concerned with pan-Africanism, and the reclaiming and forging of old and new “schemes, forms and strategies” (as Biko put it) in the realms of culture and politics.
