Esculturas Humanas Dance Company was created in 2002 by Benedito Cossa (Artistic Director), Bernardo Guiamba and Edivaldo Ernesto.
Esculturas Humanas Contemporary Dance Company is interested in developing a choreographic research based on the symbiosis between Traditional African Dance and Contemporary Dance. Considering tradition as fundamental in the construction of our identity and, at the same time, the biggest richness of our culture, we believe on the need of exposing and investigate the habits, the characteristics and the history of African culture, particularly, from the Mozambican people. African culture is still keeping ancestral memories in many rituals and ceremonies, where tradition is preserved through generations by orality and practical and direct manifestations of knowledge. Trying to preserve and keep the value of the cultural memory of Mozambican people and society, we believe is important to preserve tradition. The production of the Company looks for a fusion between Traditional and Contemporary Dance in order to preserve and promote the diffusion in an open and contemporary way. We believe, in one hand, in the value of tradition which belongs to the past and is our identity and origin, and, on the other hand, in the value of the contemporary, which is our reference in present time and space. As Mozambicans belonging to a society with particular social issues, we try to expose them in order to encourage reflection and awareness from the audience.
